Most loc wearers do well retwisting every 4 to 6 weeks. That gives your new growth enough time to lock naturally without constant tension on the roots. Retwisting every week or two might look tidy short-term, but it stresses the hair follicle and can lead to thinning over time.

- Hair type and texture — tighter textures often lock faster and need less frequent retwisting.
